Part 1- Understanding Digital Marketing
What is the Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing is any kind of marketing that happens online. It’s how businesses promote themselves and connect with their customers through things like-
- Websites
- Social media (like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok)
- Search engines (like Google, Bing)
- Online ads
For Example– when you’re scrolling through Instagram and see an ad for white sneakers, or when you Google “best pizza near me” and see a local pizzeria at the top of the results, that’s all digital marketing in action.
Why is Digital Marketing Such a Big Deal?
Digital marketing is huge right now and will be on trend in 2025 also, and it’s only getting bigger. Here’s why-
Everything and everyone is Online- In the 21st century, everyone is available on social media. On average, people spend 2 hours and 24 minutes on social media each day (Source). Everyone uses the internet to find products, buy things, and connect with others. Businesses need to be where their customers are, it is the basic of business.
It’s Trackable- Unlike traditional marketing (like billboards or TV ads), you can see exactly how well your digital marketing is working. You can track data like how many people visited your website or clicked on your ad. So you can make your ad more responsive and valuable for your business.
Cost-Effective- Small businesses can compete with big ones online. You don’t need a massive budget to get started just start with a small budget and increase it as per requirement.
It’s Personal- Digital marketing lets you target specific groups of people with messages that really speak to them.
It’s Always Changing- New tools and platforms are always popping up, which means there’s always something new to learn. So it will give you new ideas and helps you to learn more.
What are the 7 Main Types of Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing is a very broad field and there are several areas within it. Below are key areas that you should be familiar with before you go for an interview.
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)- It is the act of optimizing a website so as to appear among the top rankings of the search engine results pages of Google and other search engines. The first time I came across SEO, it seemed to be full of mysteries and then I got to know why some websites tended to rank high on the Google search results!
- Content Marketing- This is the process of developing and sharing original, useful and high-quality content (such as blogs, web stories, videos, and podcasts) with the aim of reaching and interacting with the target audience. It is like being a friend who always has useful information to share with others.
- Social Media Marketing- It is a great way to connect and engage with your potential audience. You can use social media platforms to connect with your audience and promote your brand. It’s not just about posting, it’s about building relationships.
- Email Marketing- Most people think, email marketing is dead but it’s not. Email marketing revenue worldwide is expected to reach $17.9 billion by 2027 (Source). It’s about sending targeted messages directly to people’s inboxes.
- Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising- This includes paying for advertising space on search engines such as Google and social networks such as Facebook in which case one pays whenever someone clicks on the ad.
- Affiliate Marketing- This is the process when you promote other people’s products and get a commission for each sale you generate.
- Influencer Marketing- It is popular on social media and refers to the process of collaborating with social media influencers to promote your products and services.
Part 2- Getting Started in Digital Marketing
Now that I have covered the basics, let’s talk about how you can actually get started in this field. You know it is not simple as you think, you need a lot of patience.
Figure Out What is your Interest
When I started learning about digital, I tried to learn everything at once and my mistake was i did not take any action after learning. Trust me, that’s a recipe for burnout. The smart move is Find what actually excites you.
- Ask yourself some honest questions-
- Do you love writing awesome content?
- Are you a data nerd who gets excited about numbers?
- Are you always scrolling social media and know how to grab attention?
- Do you geek out about how websites actually work?
Trust me, Your natural interests are your secret weapon. Your answers can help to take a step towards your success.
For example, if you love writing, content marketing is the best for you but if you love to be on social media then social media marketing is the best fit for you.
Start Learning the Basics
Okay, you know about your interest. Now it’s time to dive in and start learning more! Here are some ways to do that without spending money-
Online Courses (Totally Free or Super Cheap)
For Example-
- Google Digital Garage
- HubSpot Academy
- Coursera
- Udemy (Provides free access to multiple courses when launched)
- YouTube- Your Free Learning Goldmine
- Tons of marketing channels
- Watch in your spare time
- Zero cost tutorials
- Blogs That Keep You Sharp
- Backlinko
- Neil Patel
- Search Engine Journal
- Books for Deep Dives
- “Digital Marketing for Dummies” – Perfect starter book
- Read what interests you
- Podcasts for On-the-Go Learning
- “Marketing Over Coffee”
- Listen while commuting or doing chores
My Advice to you is Start small. Learn the basics. Build slowly. Your marketing skills will grow naturally. Remember, Every expert was once a beginner. Your journey starts with that first step.
Experience Matters the Most
You must have heard this line by Paulo Coelho Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience.
This is super important! You can read all the books in the world, but nothing beats actually doing the work. So you can start doing some work and you will learn while making mistakes. You can-
- Start a Blog- I think this was one of the best things I did when starting out. I learned a lot of things and It gave me a place to practice SEO, content creation, using AI and even social media marketing.
- Start with Local Business- Search your nearby locations and offer to manage their social media, SEO or write for their website. This will help you to make you portfolio strong and help you a lot in your career. I started with my local animal shelter and it was so much fun.
- Create a Mock Campaign- Choose a product or service, it can be real or imaginary and create a full digital marketing campaign for it.
- Small Freelance Projects- Upwork or Fiverr are the best resources to find small projects to work on.
- Start your own Social Media- Make your Instagram or TikTok account and start posting content. It’s a great way to learn about content creation and audience engagement.
Build Your Personal Brand
As an aspiring digital marketer, you have to take action after learning it. Start building your own personal brand online on any social media platform but for this consistency matters the most. For me, LinkedIn works the best and I have more than 10000 Friends over there.
Here’s how you can make an online presence-
- Create a LinkedIn Profile- Make sure your profile is complete and professional. Share your personal experience and articles about your niche.
- Start a Twitter Account- Follow industry leaders and join in on marketing-related Twitter chats.
- Create a Portfolio Website- You can make a website and show your projects, I used WordPress to create mine which was a great learning experience in itself but medium also an amazing platform.
- Write and Share Content- Start writing about what you’re learning. Share valuable and informative content. It could be on your own blog, on Medium, substack, tumbler or even as LinkedIn articles.
Look your personal brand is like your own mini digital marketing campaign. It’s a great way to show off your skills to potential employers or clients.
Learn the Basic Digital Marketing Tools
As you know after the AI step in the market things are changing so rapidly. Digital marketers use a lot of tools to automate the task and it will save time also. I think some of the most important ones to you should learn about them-
- Google Analytics 4- If you are making your website on WordPress then it is very important to understand website traffic and user behaviour. So many free videos are available for free on YouTube and Google also offers a free course.
- Google Search Console- It is a very helpful tool to monitor and maintain your site’s presence in Google search results.
- SEO Tools- It depends on which one is you using the most like I use SEMrush. So understand the properties of SEO tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Moz.
- Social Media Management Tools- Hootsuite or Buffer is great for managing multiple social media accounts.
- Email Marketing Tools- If you are using elementor as a website builder then you can use it as a form, and also on the Contact Us page. MailChimp is a popular choice and offers a free plan.
- Content Management Systems (CMS)- WordPress is the most popular, but also check out Wix or Squarespace.
Don’t think you need to master all of these right away. Start with one or two that are most relevant to the area of digital marketing you’re focusing on.
Understand the Importance of Data
Data has become the secret weapon to know what your audience exactly wants. One thing that surprised me when I started in digital marketing was how much it relies on data. You should understand the data and use it in your favour. Here’s why-
- Measuring Success- Data helps a lot to see what marketing efforts are actually working and what you need to improve.
- Understanding Your Audience- Data can tell you a lot about your audience is and what they like or dislike.
- Making Decisions- Good marketers use data to decide what to do next but use it ethically.
GA4 is an amazing platform to start learning about marketing data and track user’s activities there.
Stay Up-to-Date with Trends
Trends come and go, so it is important for you to be active on social media and other platforms so that you can take advantage of the trends. The digital marketing industry is changing rapidly so what works today might not work tomorrow.
That’s why Staying updated with trends is super important. You can do it-
- Follow Industry News Sites- You need to follow these Sites like Marketing Land, AdWeek, and should be active on Social Media.
- Join Online Communities- Reddit has some great digital marketing subreddits and Quora is also a great platform for staying updated.
- Attend Webinars and Virtual Conferences- These are great ways to learn from experts and network with other marketers.
- Google Trends- You can create alerts on google trends for key digital marketing terms to get news delivered straight to your inbox.
One thing you should keep in mind is that you don’t need to jump on every new trend, but it’s good to be aware of what’s happening in your relevant industry.
Part 3- Start Your Career as a Digital Marketer
Now your basics must be clear and I hope you have understood it and have also taken some actions.

- Start Your Own Agency- Once you have experience, you might decide to start your own digital marketing agency or work with high-paid clients as a freelancer.
There’s no right or wrong choice here just my experience. Think about what will work best with your goals and work style.
Build Your Network
Networking is super important, Not in MLM (jokes apart) in digital marketing. You can start building your professional network online-
- Attend Industry Events- Attend webinars or seminars relevant to your niche. You can share your experience and also doubts with them. Like I met some of my best industry contacts via LinkedIn virtual events.
